Act 1 Scene 7

Lady Macbeth leads Duncan into the castle. Macbeth is deeply troubled by the possible consequences of killing the King and considers the powerful reasons against the deed.

Macbeth think about Duncan’s virtues and imagines the terrible reactions to his murder. When he tells his wife that they must not proceed with their plans to kill Duncan, she accuses him of cowardice.

Lady Macbeth declares that she would kill her own baby rather than break a promise as Macbeth had done, and explains her plans for blaming Duncan’s murder on his bodyguards.

Convinced by his wife’s words, Macbeth agrees to her plan and says that in the meantime they must both appear innocent and welcoming.
