How does Andrew Niccol encode his ideas in the language of the film, Gattaca?
Andrew Niccol portrays Gattaca in a futuristic setting where humans can be genetically engineered to be perfect in nearly every way and humans can go to space in a suit. This is all well and good but a true futuristic setting couldn’t be complete without a proper setting. Gattaca’s setting is a monotonous one with buildings being made nearly completely out of grey concrete. The actual word for this type of architecture is modernism which is defined as ” a style or movement in the arts that aims to depart significantly from classical and traditional forms.”. Modernism in this film accentuates the streamlined lifestyle that the people of Gattaca live by creating a boring, emotionless setting with nothing particularly interesting to look at.
