Ozymandias

The poem Ozymandias is one filled with mystery and leaves plenty of questions unanswered. Percy Bysshe Shelly sets this poem in a mysterious, barren land of old where an traveler resides. He tells us that in the desert lies a remnant of past times; a statue for Ozymandias the king of kings. Ozymandias may have been a king full of passion and ambition and according to the traveler the “sculptor well those passions read”. The traveler is referring to the sculptor of the statue of Ozymandias and how they were skilled enough to read the king’s inner emotions either good or bad. The statue is adorned with a frown; one to match Ozymandias’ inner beliefs. Maybe this suggests Ozymandias was a king full of greed and arrogance or maybe it is there to represent that his ambitions led him on a path of strife and misery.
